What is las posadas? The word posada means inn in Spanish, and the posadas celebration is a traditional Mexican reenactment of the journey of Mary and Joseph in search of a place to give birth to the Messiah—including the refusal of the innkeeper to take them in.
Las posadas take place during the eight consecutive evenings, beginning on December 16th and ending on Christmas Eve Mass, and include young and old. The celebration is both reverent and playful, involving Bible readings, traditional songs, candles, praying the Rosary, and playacting, and at the end of each night’s festivities, there is a communal meal (typically including tamales and/or atole) and, often, the breaking of a piñata.
Bring your family and your Bible! (activities will be carried out in Spanish)
